Guillem Vidal

Welcome!

I am a social scientist working at the intersection of political economy and public policy.

My focus is on producing actionable research to inform governments and institutions.

I have worked in both academia and the public sector, including roles at the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Spanish government, and the European Commission.

I hold a Ph.D. in Social and Political Sciences from the European University Institute, with a background in economics and international relations.

Research

I study how economic inequality shapes politics — and how public policy can change it — in modern democracies. My publications are listed here.

Political Economy

I study how economic growth is distributed across society and the political consequences of wealth inequality. My work explores how class structures are changing in the digital age, how citizens perceive and respond to inequality, and how the distribution of economic resources shapes political attitudes and behavior.

Social Policy

My work examines policies that address inequality, including universal basic income, universal inheritance, and wealth redistribution. I use simulation methods to assess the cost and distributive impact of such policies, and I study how policy design shapes public attitudes toward redistribution.

Comparative Politics

I study how group identities anchor political cleavages and how people's sense of who they are shapes where they stand on contentious issues. My research explores political persuasion, populism, and how struggles over recognition, migration, and insecurity are reshaping political contestation in rich democracies.
